Google Discovers Sex Is Popular 
By: SearchNewz Staff 2006-04-25 One out of every five searches on Google Mobile are searches for porn. This revelation will be presented in Montreal tomorrow by Google researchers at the CHI 2006 Conference. Sure wish I'd known about this earlier. Oh wait, I did.
Mad props to eWeek and Search Engine Watch for picking up on it. Though I'm still trying to figure out what Google's Cell Phone Sex Problem is. If searchers are finding it, then there's no problem, right? Originally reported in NewScientist.com, Google employees Maryan Kamvar and Shumeet Baluja sifted through a batch of one million search queries to find that 20 percent were devoted to naughtiness on the go. Compared to Kamvar and Baluja's estimate of 8.5 percent of desktop computers, that's a significantly higher number. Even then, it is still below the ICM Registry's estimate of 25 percent globally. Perhaps Google users are less depraved? Why the cell phone? Well, in addition to matching trends of early adopted technology at which the porn industry is always at the forefront (that's scholarly speech that's supposed to make people remember when their computer was an email and porn machine), researchers also postulate that the cell phone is more private than a work or home PC. Because it is more intensely private, the cell phone may be a special case. PDAs, for example, where a different "business" is often conducted, showed a much lower rate of porn surfing. Research showed that just 5 percent of PDA searches were for adult material. In other words, people seem to be keeping business and pleasure separate. Just as long as they don't accidentally download an inappropriate ring tone or leave their mobile at a restaurant with a newly acquired raunchy wallpaper on it, all's good in the world of mobile search.
