Google’s 'Silver Medals'

Steve Rubel has coined a great term: "Silver Medals", for those secondary results Google will sometimes show on searches. Don't be surprised if you hear that being thrown around a bit.

So, how does Google choose its silver medals? I always assumed it was nothing more than the second most relevant page for that search. The silver medal for a search for my name is this post, which makes sense, what with 99 links pointint at it. Sometimes I get confused when Google runs a silver medal, and I click on the "More results from _______.com" link, only to see a very different ordering of result.
