Google Plays With Search Result Pages

A report has begun to circulate that Google's vaunted minimalist results pages now display graphs on the left side of the page.

IDG reported on a change being seen by some Firefox users. From a Google search, small green bar-graphs appear to the left of the search results.

The report provided a link to a screenshot showing the view from the desktop of a freelance writer in Seattle, Matthew Amster-Burton. He said he was not logged in to Google as a personalized homepage user.

When IDG tried to duplicate those results from a New York office, they saw the same graphs in Firefox, but not in Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

What they are seeing appears to be a navigation change, with the "More," "Advanced Search," and "Preferences" links shifted to the left side of the page, under the graphs, from their previous location next to the big Search button.

Google hasn't posted anything on its blog yet about the experiment. At first glance, the graphs look like they indicate the number of occurrences of a search term on various Google search sites.
