Lycos Planning Video Support For Blogs

Users of a new service called Lycos Planet will be able to blog and upload images and video along with their posts.

The Washington Post reported that the Lycos search engine will unveil a service called Lycos Planet today. The service will be aimed at the same market targeted by News Corp's MySpace, a younger audience of bloggers.

Lycos will let those bloggers upload content, including photos and videos, to Lycos Planet. Many blogging sites like Blogger do not host content beyond the text of a post due to the enormous amount of storage space that would be required if many users uploaded that type of content.

The company was one of the early search engines on the Internet, but like AltaVista and others was swept aside by the Google phenomenon. Now, Lycos seeks to recast itself as a creative portal, driven by user-provided content.

They also hope to gain support from major entertainment providers, the article said, as it attempts to reestablish itself. That puts Lycos up against the big players, like Yahoo and AOL, both of which have a lot of big-time media content available online now.
