Google It To The Limit

In Australia, Google Maps project lead engineer Lars Rasmussen said developers need to use more browser features.

Just because not every browser supports a feature doesn't mean developers should ignore those features. That's the basic idea of a keynote speech given in Australia given by Mr. Rasmussen, according to a ZDNet report.

"Go beyond browsers' lowest common denominator," he advised developers in his speech. The Google Maps application, for example, uses Extensible Stylesheet Language+ and Microsoft's Vector Markup Language.

Not all browsers support those technologies. Google Maps recognizes when that is the case, and uses different technology to deliver results to a browser like Firefox. Maps, like many other advanced applications developed recently, takes advantage of AJAX technology to deliver those features.

Mr. Rasmussen points out how browsers lack access to full computer resources, creating bottlenecks. That may be a necessary compromise, though, as malicious attackers on the Internet have been increasing their assault on users via browser exploits. Increased access to system resources could be very damaging.

Browsers offer developers the opportunity to make an application more widely available to users across OS platforms, and the article also notes users don't have to download and install additional software to use a web-based application.
