Article Date: 2005-07-22

Orkut, Google's social network service, has quite a following in Central and South America. This fact has even been acknowledged by Google co-founder Sergey Brin.

They say that all publicity is good publicity, however, yesterday Orkut was connected to some news Google probably doesn't want it to be associated with: drug trafficking. According to a Reuters report, 10 Brazilians were arrested for drug distribution while using an Orkut network as a primary means of communication.

The Reuters article references one of the arresting officers, who, security's sake, remained unnamed. His statements indicate while 10 were arrested, more may be involved. The group was distributing ecstasy and marijuana.
