Google Maps API Now Available

With popularity of Google Maps continuing to increase, due in large part to the inclusion of satellite mapping technology, many users out there have introduced a number of hacks and tricks that take advantage of the mapping technology.
Now Google has introduced the Google Maps API in an effort to assist developers who would like to integrate their own twists onto the map service through the use of JavaScript. According to their about page, people can use the Google Maps API to do the following:
The Google Maps API lets developers embed Google Maps in their own web pages with JavaScript. You can add overlays to the map (including markers and polylines) and display shadowed "info windows" just like Google Maps
