Google Sitemaps Slashdotted

Every so often, even a big guy gets knocked down. Such is the case with Google's newest tool for webmasters, at least temporarily.
Apparently, after word got out about Google Sitemaps, a XML-based tool designed initiate a crawl when a site is updated, news of the launch made one of the Internet's most popular web sites, Slashdot and got knocked off, according to SearchEngineRoundtable.com.
Occasionally, some of the news sites/forums/net hangouts generate so much traffic to the target site that it overwhelms the webserver. There are even Internet colloquialisms dedicated to this act; such as your site has been Slashdotted or Behold the Power of Fark.
According to Rusty's report, users who tried to access Sitemaps were greeted with a 502 Server Error message. Obviously, Google would want to remedy a situation like this as quickly as possible, and this is now the case. The Google Sitemaps page seems to be functioning as normal.
