Yahoo!: If You Can't Beat 'Em, Buy Their Engine

Yahoo recently relaunched their search engine, and the results are decidedly Googlish. From the stripped-down look, to the news search focus, Yahoo! has clearly studied the master in their new bid for search supremacy.
I visited their new search site and here's the skinny:
1) From the bottom of the Yahoo! results page: "Search Technology provided by Google"
2) The results are exactly the same -- exactly
3) They even have a toolbar (that doesn't display useful information like page rank...)
3) There IS a handy "open in new window" button beside each search result listing
4) Yahoo's figuring out how to leverage their massive amount of online content and boost page views by placing an "Inside Yahoo!" section above their sponsors' links.
5) There is a map short cut
6) You can change your preferences so that clicked results automatically open in a new window, certain languages don't appear, and search results on a page appear in the numbers you choose
Ok, so here's the 235 million dollar question:
Why did Yahoo! buy Inktomi in December if they're still paying Google for results?
I'll be searching for my answer to that question on Google, thanks.
