Google Goes Back To 2001!

As part of Google's 10th birthday celebrations, they've made the unprecedented move of releasing a full version of their search index that dates back to 2001. The search engine features an old logo (with exclamation mark!) and is missing many of the features we've come to expect like other search types and the "I'm feeling lucky" button.

Google have also partnered with the Internet Archive Wayback Machine to give users a look at what each site looked like back in 2001. You can see an example for 'ineedhits' below:

Google also points out a number of now popular searches that produced no results back in 2001:

"iPod" did not refer to a music player, "youtube" was nonsense, and if you were looking for "Michael Phelps," chances are you meant the scientist, not the swimmer. "Wikipedia" was brand new.
Google have never released an older search index before, and I'd say this is not likely to be repeated anytime soon. The site will be pulled down later this month, so if you've got any other interesting search queries, let us know below!
