Steve Irwin, Tennis, And Various Blunders Get Zeitgeist Nods
By: Doug Caverly 2006-09-07 The top gaining search query for the week ending September 4 shouldn't come as a surprise - everyone's favorite Australian, the late Steve Irwin, nabbed that spot. Much of the rest of the Zeitgeist was vaguely sports-related, with an emphasis on tennis. A couple of "slip-ups" also made the list. Irwin, of course, died recently after a freak stingray attack. Although a lot of funny jokes have come as a result of this incident (there's already a game in which you can "Avenge the Crocodile Hunter" by shooting stingrays with spear guns), most people seem genuinely saddened by his passing. On to happier things, though. The U.S. Open tennis tournament placed second in the Zeitgeist. And yet this event also caused more than a few eyes to grow misty, as Andre Agassi gave his tearful farewell to the sport before retiring. Agassi was number five on Google's list. Two other tennis players also made it into the top fifteen. Serena Williams, who was eliminated by Amelie Mauresmo, was thirteenth on the Zeitgeist. "Sharapova," (Maria Sharapova, that is) was fifteenth, and will next face the French woman in tournament play. Sharapova has gotten a lot of attention due to her appearance (which is rather pleasant, in case you're not aware). Brynn Cameron, who made number three on the list, is also considered attractive in some corners, although this caused a bit of trouble for her. Cameron, a women's basketball player, is now pregnant with the child of Matt Leinart, the quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals. Oops. Kyra Phillips, a CNN anchor, made a mistake recently, as well, although it was one of less consequence. Phillips accidentally left her microphone on when she went to the restroom during a press conference - this earned her fourth place on the Zeitgeist. She was a good sport about the thing, though, and presented a very funny "Top Ten" list on Letterman. To see the rest of the most recent Zeitgeist, click here.
