Yahoo CEO Speaks About Delays, Google, And Tennis
By: Doug Caverly 2006-08-16 On Monday, a Fortune Magazine interview with Yahoo CEO Terry Semel came out. Adam Lashinsky conducted the questioning, and he managed to get several interesting answers out of the Yahoo boss. He also found out that Semel and Rupert Murdoch are about evenly matched as tennis players. One of the more challenging questions Lashinsky threw at Semel related to a product release. "How could you say in May the search-advertising platform was ready, only to delay it two months later?" he asked. "In May we began to test the platform and show it to advertisers," Semel responded. "We decided we wanted more time to do additional tests, and advertisers told us they wanted more time to adapt their systems. We decided to do it properly rather than rush." Another curveball came later in the interview, when Lashinsky mentioned, "Google's motto is 'Don't be evil.' What's Yahoo's?" According to the write-up, a "long pause" followed before Semel answered. "I don't know that we have a motto. Well, the mission of the company is, Deliver great value to our consumers and, basically, value them," the CEO said at last. That's not exactly as confidence-inspiring as Google's phrase, and the Yahoo competitor also wins points for being much more concise. There are a few more Google-related questions sprinkled throughout the interview, which is really worth reading. It's available here. Readers will also discover that when Semel and Rupert Murdoch play tennis, "we play doubles, and it depends who has the pro." Now, I love tennis, but that mental image really reinforces the idea of it as a sport for rich white guys. Tag: Terry Semel Add to Del.icio.us | Digg | Yahoo! My Web | Furl
