KartOO's Visual Meta Search
By: Doug Caverly 2006-07-26 KartOO does a good job of describing its "visual meta search engine" - simply put, the thing "presents its results on a map." It's a very interesting way to see information displayed, and, more to the point, it appears to work well. The free metasearch engine can be found here. Try as I might to describe it, it's probably best to go see for yourself. KartOO shows you a scattering of results once you type in a query. I have to note the strange-looking windsurfer who is displayed in the meantime. Each result is shown as a text blurb next to a pile of pages - the more pages shown, the better the result (in theory). As you center your cursor over any result, KartOO tells you some of what the site has to offer. It's an interesting, intuitive way to search. As far as accuracy, well . . . . The KartOO FAQ page says that the technology is "often . . . but not always" "more pertinent than other search engines." You may be able to download KartOO before long, which would lead to "faster access to your searches." The engine's capacity is also discussed. "KartOO's search capacity is slightly superior to that of a standard search engine though there cannot be any wonderful results: the various search engines have a lot of their pages in common and combining the various results does not give you such a wide coverage of the information available online . . . ." KartOO worked well when I ran a few queries through it. It's probably not going to overthrow Google anytime soon, but it's a neat site. KartOO Add to Del.icio.us | Digg | Yahoo! My Web | Furl
