Apprentice Google has learned its PR/Sith skills well from Darth Jobs at Apple, in being able to stir up online chatter with just a clue about a forthcoming service.

Googler Greg Stein ratcheted the noisemakers in the blogosphere to eleven when he posted a stay-tuned announcement on the Google Code blog:

I've been working with a great team for a while now to produce a new Google Service for the Open Source community -- in fact, we're putting the final touches on it as I write this blog post.

Come to my OSCON talk on Thursday the 27th, at 1:45pm, to learn more!

Stein was guaranteed an audience anyway by virtue of being one of the worker bees in the Googleplex hive. His appearance at O'Reilly's Open Source Conference, or OSCON if you like, has been titled TBD in the conference notes.

ZDNet's "Googling Google" blogger Garett Rogers knows what he would like to see and isn't afraid to detail his wish list:

Well, I am speculating here, but wouldn't it be great if Google provided a service like SourceForge with the search capability of Krugle , excellent revision control using SVN and continuous integration with Cruise Control?

Since Stein has a history with Subversion and WebDAV (and oh yes, he's also chairman of the Apache Software Foundation), Rogers may be on to something. Let's hope whatever it is turns out to be more compelling than the Google Pack.
