Google Hiring 1,000 In Michigan
By: David Utter 2006-07-11 Thanks to East Lansing native and Michigan graduate Larry Page, Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm is receiving an election year present in the form of 1,000 new high-tech industry jobs. Google plans to hire 1,000 people over a five year period to work in its Ann Arbor facility, according to a Detroit News report. A formal announcement should be made this morning, with job postings to follow on Google's job site. Michigan has one of the worst economies in the US, and Granholm's administration had to back off its usual high tax approach to business by offering Google $38 million in single-business tax (SBT) breaks over the next 20 years. "We were competing for this, and we knew it," James Epolito, chief executive officer of the Michigan Economic Development Corp., said in the report. Google has been searching for office space in Michigan. As far back as a year ago, Google reportedly wanted to find 75,000 square feet of office space in the state. The article indicated space should be available, as Ann Arbor has had higher than normal office vacancies in recent months. --- Tag: Google Add to Del.icio.us | Digg | Yahoo! My Web | Furl
