Google has released its own version of Microsoft Passport. The product was given the catchy title of Account Authentication Proxy for Web-Based Applications. The performance of the search engine giants stock also drew a bit of attention. And an online retailer named Gmarket, which has nothing to do with Google, made headlines.

Google wrote that its authentication for web-based applications allows the application to access a Google service protected by a users Google account. The new tool can maintain a high level of security . . . without ever handling the users account login information.

You can find a nifty little diagram here that illustrates interactions between the three entities involved: web application, Google servers, and the user. There is also a lot more information, most of it of a technical nature, about the application.

In an unrelated development, Googles stock hit a 2-month high on Thursday, as noted by RealTimeTraders.com. The blurb describes this accomplishment as coming after a 6-session range. Googles stock reached $417.81 after going up by $11.70.

Reuters noted the performance of a stock that certainly sounds like it belongs in the Google family. Gmarket, which is based in South Korea, is actually owned in part (10 percent) by Yahoo. Its stock increased by almost 10 percent after their IPO of 9.1 million shares on Thursday.

As far as other recent Google news items, there was the release of the Google Checkout service, as well as some changes to Google Video. As always, it seems, there are plenty of goings-on at Google.
