Chinese SEO: Elbow Grease Or Palm Grease?
By: SearchNewz Staff 2006-06-20 According to a forum thread on Search Engine Watch, "organic" listings on major Chinese search engines can be bought. Though it doesn't appear to be the same for Google's (broken) Chinese leg, forum posters agree engines based in the country, like Baidu and Sina, have extensive paid inclusion among search results. After a plea for advice on how to optimize for the Chinese web, SEO expert Ian McAnerin replied: I can tell you this: almost everything (including "organic" listings) is for sale in China, if you know who to talk to. I don't think Google sells organics there, but the Chinese ones mostly do.
SEO in China is mostly SEM. Webmasters don't have to worry about setting up a "standard Chinese meeting," as "klown" the thread's author called it, to plow businessmen with booze and women. MacAnerin says a simple contact about paid inclusion and advertising would do. MacAnerin also advised optimizing for Google.cn as you would for Google.com. Check these lists of banned keywords before you do, though. Chinese SEO | Drag this to your Bookmarks.
