Google Personalizes Foreign Homepages
By: Chris Richardson 2006-06-13 While Google has fought acceptance of the "portal" label, they have introduced a number of personalization features allowing users to alter the look and functionality of Google's start page to fit their needs. Now this technology is going international with the launch of Google's personalized service for six additional countries. According to the Official Google Blog, Google account members of the following countries now have the ability to personalize their Google start page: Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland and New Zealand. When users select to personalize Google's homepage, some of the gadgets available to them include: Gmail access, Google News headlines as well as additional news sources, weather forecasts, stock quotes, and movie showtimes. Users can also display a list of favorites sites (which can be accessed anywhere you can log into your Google account), and a section featuring whatever web content (usually in feed format) you choose to display. Not only has Google made their personalization service more widely available, they've also introduced a World Cup gadget that delivers scores, standings and schedules to those who've activated this particular widget. If you would like to view additional Google Personalized Homepage gadgets, you can do so here.
