Google Book Search In Trouble - Again

The Google Book Search, formerly known as Google Print, is ruffling feathers yet again. Publishers spoke out against the project during the All Party Internet Group's report on digital rights management.

Copyright remains the primary point of contention. "There is the serious issue of the digitization of massive library collections where the majority of works are in copyright. Google digitizes entire books, not just indexing but displaying the entire work," said Hugh Jones, the copyright counsel for the Publishers Association.

"It's important to remember that publishers want to publish, and find markets - we're not interested in locking up content," Jones continued. "We love search engines, but there is an instructive distinction between library services and publisher services."

Rachel Whetstone, Google's European head of communications for Google, defended Google Book Search, asserting that only two or three pages of each copyright-protected text were available for viewing. Also, "If publishers don't want to participate in the books program, we exclude them," she said.

Google claims it is boosting book sales by providing advertisements and information on how to buy the books. "With millions of people online, we turn those searchers into buyers," Whetstone claimed.

Outside experts on the issue seem unsurprised by the conflict. "There's not necessarily a coincidence of interest between search engines and copyright holders," said Lynne Brindley, chief executive of The British Library.

Laurie Kaye of Laurence Kaye Solicitors held a similar opinion. "Commercial players are concerned about the loss of control over their content. Their content database being held on other servers creates uncertainty," she said.

Arguments over Google Book Search have already generated legal filings. If these latest statements are any indication, the search engine giant may face still more trouble over this project.
