Microsoft Combines Active Search With Email
By: Chris Richardson 2006-06-05 No, the fellows at Redmond, Washington are not releasing a new email service to replace Hotmail. However, they are introducing a new desktop email application - Windows Live Mail Desktop - that may signal a change of focus from the Outlook family to smaller applications like this one. What makes Microsoft's new email application so attractive, at least from the search engine perspective, is the inclusion of Microsoft's Active Search technology. According to the Windows Spaces weblog, Active Search will "bridge the gap" between email and personalized search. The entry describes using Active Search as, "essentially the same as conducting a ton of related searches the old fashioned way - by cutting and pasting terms from your email into a separate web browser - only without all the effort." Essentially, Active Search works by scanning user email and presenting a number of keywords that can be search with the click of a mouse. Once this is done, Active Search returns a number of sponsored search results in the right sidebar of the Windows Live Mail Desktop application. In order to ease the learning process, once users install Windows Live Mail they receive a tutorial email from MSN explaining how to use Active Search, including instructions on disabling it. Because the technology works by email scanning, privacy issues are also addressed in the blog entry: While Active Search provides a deeply personalized experience, we know how important your privacy is to you, so we've worked hard to ensure comply with Microsoft's Online Privacy Statement which reflects our commitment to ensuring that consumers have the ability to control the collection, use and disclosure of their personal information. Windows Live Mail Desktop is currently undergoing a limited beta test. More information can be found here. Thanks to MarketingVOX for pointing this out.
