Microsoft Licensing InfoUSA For Local Search

InfoUSA will provide its business database of 13.5 million US listings to Microsoft for use in MSN Local Search and Windows Live Local.

The directory assistance database infoUSA will provide "Microsoft users with the most relevant and timely yellow page and local search results," said Vin Gupta, Chairman and CEO of infoUSA.

Information provided by infoUSA is used by the top five search sites online: Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL, and Ask.com. InfoUSA also said it is adding enhancements like storefront photographs with GPS coordinates for businesses to its database.

Although financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, the local search market itself is shaping up to be a multi-billion dollar battleground.

By 2010, local paid search advertising could be a $4 billion market. Microsoft and its search competitors all want to dominate as much of that market as possible, preferably at the painful expense of rivals.
