Yahoo Unleashes Livesearch On AlltheWeb 
By: David Utter 2006-05-10 The new service shows search results while the user types a query in the search box, speeding up the whole process of finding information. It's in beta, and works with Internet Explorer and Firefox, and the AlltheWeb Livesearch draws results from Yahoo's search index. That's the essential bits of the service, announced recently by Don Chennavasin of Yahoo! Search on their blog. Functionally, Livesearch represents an easier way to shave a few keystrokes off the typing needed to start a query. It suggests queries through auto-completion, displaying the most likely query on the left side of the page as the user types. Then it's a simple click to launch that query and generate results. "As some of you might be thinking, this is an evolution of Instant Search and other search technologies we’ve been working on," Chennavasin wrote. Instant Search gives results while the user types, for results that can usually be found with Yahoo Shortcuts or common searches. Chennavasin recalled a piece of AlltheWeb's history, in noting how it was the first search engine to include calculator functionality within the search box. Wikipedia cited how it ran neck and neck with Google back when the two sites competed based on the number of pages they each indexed. Fast Search and Transfer, the creators of AlltheWeb, introduced it in 1999. It was acquired by Yahoo via its purchase of Overture in March 2004, according to Wikipedia. Now that Livesearch can get search queries started faster, hopefully Andrei Broder and the other search engineers at Yahoo will be able to improve the relevance of the results AlltheWeb finds in Yahoo's index.
