Mandarin Google Leaves A Bitter Taste
By: David Utter 2006-05-02 Google's selection of Guge as the name for its services in China has left the locals there either snickering, criticizing, or scratching their heads over the choice. Only a couple of weeks after Google decided the ideograms for "valley" and "song" would make a delightful name for its presence in China, some linguistic feedback has been less than a sweet song for the company. UCLA's AsiaMedia reported on the response to Google's name choice, Guge, and they did not use the word "positive" in their article: (T)he world's biggest search engine is now under fire for choosing a name many users criticize as awkward, nonsensical or rude.
(I)n a poll by news portal Sina.com, 85% of respondents were opposed to Guge. Tens of thousands of others have signed an online petition calling for Google to rethink its Chinese identity. The report noted a comment by one of the leader's of the campaign to persuade Google to change the name. "When I first heard the name Guge, I couldn't help laughing. It sounded like fool, funny and fart." Soso is the founder of igogo8.com, a Google-brand parody site. Those who don't find Guge an amusing name have a sense of humor about the suggestions for a name change. The suggested name Good Gou, for "good dog," tweaks Google over its capitulation to Chinese censorship guidelines to set up shop in China. --- Tags: Google, Guge Add to | DiggThis | Yahoo!
