Ask Names Jim Lanzone CEO
By: Chris Richardson 2006-04-24 Last week, we learned that long time Ask CEO Steve Berkowitz is jumping ship to join forces with MSN Search. In response to Berkowitz's defection, Ask wasted no time in finding his replacement, which comes from within the Ask/IAC hierarchy. In order to fill the vacuum left by the Berkowitz decision, IAC has appointed Jim Lanzone as Ask.com Chief Executive Officer. Lanzone previously acted as Vice President of Product Management for IAC's gritty, never-say-die search engine. Lanzone has been with Ask.com since 2001. A snippet of the press release reveals more about Ask's decision to go with Lanzone: "Jim is one of the most respected leaders in the search industry, having been principally responsible every day for the turnaround of the Ask product and brand over the past several years," said Doug Lebda, IAC President and Chief Operating Officer. "With his vision for the future and successful track record for driving the Ask.com business, he has been and will be the ideal leader for the next stage of the company's growth." As of this writing, reaction to Lanzone's promotion has been muted (or just slow to come out), but Barry Schwartz of SearchEngineRoundtable and SearchEngineWatchBlog fame says, "I have had many conversations with Jim over the years - I am a huge fan of Jim and I think this is a great move for Ask.com."
