Shutdown Of Google Videos Causes Concern
By: Courtney Mills 2011-04-27 Google's recent decision to shut down its Google Videos service has left many users perplexed. Google has been issuing emails to all its users since Friday 15th April asking them to transfer... ...or download their videos from the site before the 29th April. Any videos still on Google Videos after this date will no longer be viewable. While users won't be able to view their videos on the site after April 29, the download function will still be available until 13th May 2011. After this date any remaining videos will be automatically deleted by Google from the site. If course, Google is encouraging its users to move their video clips to YouTube. Though Google stopped accepting uploads almost 2 years to the Google Videos site, this move by Google has left everyone asking just one question; why did it take Google so long to shut down Google Videos? You would expect this shutdown would have occurred back in 2006 after it acquired YouTube. The advantage of Google Videos was that it allowed users to upload long format videos, including a lot of cool documentaries and other obscure "real" productions rather than amateur productions seen on YouTube. Moving videos over to YouTube might pose a problem for some Google Videos users " YouTube breaks a video into ten minute segments. This could be a quite annoying when it comes to searching and watching videos. Users could view up to 10 segments of a video in order to see it in full. Google has not given any specific reason for this closure, but it is long overdue. If you actually think about it, when was the last time you searched for something and found a relevant Google Videos result?
