Do You Care For The New Google Homepage?

By: Matthew Elshaw

Last week Rene posted about Google's new homepage design, along with some of the other changes that didn't make the final cut. With millions of people worldwide using the new design...

... since last week, the revamp appears to have been a success with little or no complaints from users so far.

With such a drastic change to the worlds most popular search engine, I was expecting to see a bit more controversy over the design. As I pointed out in a comment on last weeks post, there are a couple of elements that still bug me about the new design.
  1. Duplicated search options panel" Given that Google's new search filters on the left hand side can be found duplicated at the top of the page, I'm not sure why they've decided to include them again.

  2. Cluttered Design" After recently removing every element from their homepage with a fade-in design, they've decided to clutter the results page with bold icons an additional column and extra borders.

  3. Design Consistency" The icons used to represent each search filter are very bold and don't seem to follow Google's traditional look and feel. For example, take a look at their homepage icons compared to others which can be found here.

They aren't major complaints, and I certainly won't be switching search engines over it but I'd love to hear your thoughts. Let us know in the comments below what you think of the new design.

P.S. If you want the classic Google look back, bookmark the following URL http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=allYou can also switch back to the new look here.
