Yahoo! Makes Deals For Sports Sites And Mobile
By: Courtney Mills 2010-03-24 It was only a couple of weeks back when I wrote about the lack of activity we have seen from Yahoo! recently in regards to search. However recently they have announced not one... ...but two new ventures. The first is a deal with Spains largest telecommunications company, Telefonica. Although the details of the deal are still a little sketchy, we do know that Telefonica has named Yahoo! the exclusive search and search advertising provider on its mobile portal in Spain. This is an important milestone as we extend our relationship with Telefnica and offer consumers across Spain with an engaging mobile search experience that enables them to discover their world and the world around them, said Rich Riley, senior vice president, Yahoo! Europe. Together, Telefnica and Yahoo! are enhancing the mobile Internet experience for consumers, while creating scale for advertisers, enabling them to reach the rapidly growing audience of mobile consumers. News of this deal appears to be well received by the experts including analyst Scott Ellison who said: "The expansion of Yahoo!s mobile search partnership with Telefonica into Spain continues to demonstrate Yahoo!s ability to provide highly personalized and localized mobile search experiences and further establishes its position as a leading mobile customer experience provider. Building a significant European market presence is essential toward executing a successful mobile strategy." The second announcement from Yahoo! is the acquisition of social sports site Citizen Sports. While it is not directly relating to search, Yahoo! plans to use Citizen Sports to aggregate and distribute more social media content online. Yahoos Consumer Products Group Senior Vice President, Bryan Lamkin explains more: "Yahoo! is in a unique position to combine our deep expertise in content and aggregation technology to offer a highly personalized social experience. Sports has been among the earliest online categories to experience rapid social proliferation, and the combination of Citizen Sports leading products with our world-class sports experience on Yahoo! Sports is a win-win for sports fans globally." While the financial details of the purchase have not been disclosed, technology blog All Things Digital estimates the value of CitizenSports.com at between 40 and 50 million US dollars. It is expected that the range of Citizen Sports products will compliment Yahoo! Sports with content being cross-shared across both areas. So, while both deals arent ground breaking, it would appear that Yahoo! is certainly making some moves in 2010 to claw back its position as a top online company.
