Google'a 1GB/sec Fiber Optic Broadband Plans 
By: Navneet Kaushal 2010-02-12 Google announces the experiment to build and test ultra high-speed broadband networks in some trial regions of US. Its planning to deliver 1Gb/sec broadband service to the Americans... ...that will be around 100 times faster to the normally accessible internet speed in US. These will be the revolutionary fiber-to-home connections, that will be offered to only 50,000 to a maximum of 500,000 people, at a competitive price. This powerful broadband service will allow the users to download a full-length high definition movie in less than 5 minutes. Google plans to make internet access faster and better with this new experiment. Our goal is to experiment with new ways to help make Internet access better and faster for everyone. Here are some specific things that we have in mind: • Next generation apps: We want to see what developers and users can do with ultra high-speeds, whether it's creating new bandwidth-intensive "killer apps" and services, or other uses we can't yet imagine. • New deployment techniques: We'll test new ways to build fiber networks, and to help inform and support deployments elsewhere, we'll share key lessons learned with the world. • Openness and choice: We'll operate an "open access" network, giving users the choice of multiple service providers. And consistent with our past advocacy, we'll manage our network in an open, on-discriminatory and transparent way. Google is basically trying hands at the 'trail and error' method to develop what it aims at. But to begin with, it has put up a Request For Information (RFI) form to recognize the interested communities. It will collect all the responses by March 26 and will then announce the target communities. You get involved here.
