Has The Bing Bubble Burst? Google's Share Up To 72% 
By: Courtney Mills 2010-01-18 The results are in and its no surprise that Google still has a commanding hold on the US search market. But has the Bing bubble burst? Hitwise reports that while Googles market share rose in December 2009 to 72%, Bings actually decreased by 4% from November 2009. The same can also be said for Yahoo! & Ask (but thats really no surprise, is it?). Here are the official stats from Hitwise. Its not all bad news for Bing, though. Hitwise reports that Bing is showing strong signs in its success rate. "In October 2009, Bings success rate was well below the competition with a success rate just north of 70%. That rate has been steadily increasing, and now Bing is showing a success rate over 75%. There is one caveat when reading these numbers; search success rate is often influenced by the complexity of the search. Traditionally, portal search engines tend to have more simple navigational and brand related queries in their top searches which are easier to resolve then searches for information." Hitwise determines the success rate as the percentage of executed searches that result in a visit to a site other than a main search domain.The chart below outlines the main search engines success rates since October. What I found most interesting was the statistics on search queries. Longer search queries - those averaging five to more than eight words long - were down 2% from November to December. This actually really surprises me. With the holiday shopping season in full swing in December, I would have thought that searchers would be more descriptive in their search query, so that they found exactly what they were searching for and quickly. Here is a breakdown of the search query lengths, which will no doubt be useful information for any search advertising campaigns So thats a wrap - there were certainly no surprises in the overall search market share. However, it will be interesting to keep an eye on Bings success rate & the impact this could have on Googles overall market share in 2010.
