Google Hits Back At Yelp Rejection With 'Near Me Now'...
By: Courtney Mills 2010-01-11 ...Mobile Feature! After failing in its bid to buy local review site, Yelp, Google have launched a new mobile search tool that could be detrimental to Yelps mobile success. Near Me Now turns your location into an automated search query and makes finding or learning about places in your immediate vicinity very easy. Currently available for iPhone and Android phone users in the U.S. Near me now utilizes GPS to determine your whereabouts and then searches for results near your location. By clicking on the Explore right here option you are presented with a list of local businesses that Google believe is in the same place as you. Clicking on any of these listings will bring you to the particular business mobile place page. The feature is sure to be a blow to sites or applications such as UrbanSpoon and MapQuest. Google explains more about the feature on the Google Mobile blog here or you can check out Googles quick video below. As an iPhone owner, I think this is a great tool. I no longer have to go searching through my list of applications to try and find UrbanSpoon, I can simply go to the easily accessible Google browser instead.
