Google Takes On ITunes With Music Search
By: Courtney Mills 2009-11-03 Next time you search for your favourite song on Google you will likely be surprised with the new option to stream that song in its entirety for free thanks to the new Music Onebox feature. Music OneBox is essentially a beefed-up search result for music. If you type a song name into Google, you may see some info about the tune and a link where you can stream it from a third-party music service. Google have partnered with MySpace, Lala, Pandora and imeem to make this possible. Here is how Googles Murali Viswanathan and Ganesh Ramanarayanan explain the new feature: "Today, were rolling out a search feature that does just that by enabling you to search and more easily discover millions of songs, all via a simple Google web search. If youre searching for music, time to result is really time to music. Now, when you enter a music-related query " like the name of a song, artist or album " your search results will include links to an audio preview of those songs provided by our music search partners MySpace or Lala. When you click the result youll be able to listen to an audio preview of the song directly from one of those partners." You will see that if you click on the link in the search results to listen to the song, a pop-up box from Lala will appear, allowing you to play the song without actually have to go to the site. This feature is currently only limited to US searchers and as always if you would like to find out more, then Google have produced a neat little video for you. Being quite a big music fan, I can see that I am going to really like this new feature especially if I am trying to find out the name of my new favourite song.
