MSN Portal Makeover
By: Rene LeMerle 2009-07-20 The team at Microsoft are working overtime at the moment, with Bing launching, Yahoo! deals and now MSN overhaul! Microsofts MSN portal is receiving an extreme makeover, with a clear and simple mandate to the team " Do Less Better As was the case with most web portals, the goal was to be everything to everybody. A one stop source of everything you need online. Times are changing, and being a jack of all trades isnt always the best business or experience model. And as has been the trend recently, Microsoft are going back to the drawing board with their portal direction. Moving forwards, the portal will be focused on 5 core verticals;
The other sections of the current MSN portal wont be abandoned, but instead will become purely syndicated content. Original content creation will be reserved for the top 5 verticals. Microsofts main competitors in the portal space are Yahoo! and AOL, and its hoped that the MSN makeover will help it gain a greater share of the portal user market.
