Google Won't Buy NYT But May Offer Some Help

In the tenuous world of new world online giant vs old world media giant (Google vs. the New York Times) there appears to be some attempts to make peace of sorts.

The Business Insider at the Silicon Valley Insider is reporting that talks between the two companies are still going. The subject matter, however, is not a sale but rather options to help the NYT garner some revenue through Google. The Insider says:

" Were not aware of any definite plans coming out of those meetings, only what one source called one or two different models that people are curious about.

They were:
* A potential agreement in which any time Googles search crawlers find a Web site carrying New York Times content and Google ads, Google would split the revenue it gets from those ads with the Times.
* Google would somehow help the New York Times actually embed ads within its text so that when blogs or other Web sites use that text, the ads go with it. We have no idea how Google and the Times would do this. Neither does our source."

The chairman of the New York Times, Arthur Sulzberger, has been to Mountain View in the past month and there are continued discussions

"A New York Times spokesperson told us: We have been collaborating with Google for quite some time and we continue to discuss a number of potential projects with them.

It is also being reported that Googles CEO Eric Schmidt has met with the Washington Post regarding collaboration efforts as well. Considering that its hard to tell if Schmidt is a Googles CEO, chief spokesperson, Washington insider or whatever why not make a visit while setting up shop in DC anyway?
