Google’s New Rich Snippets, Good Idea Or Bad?

By: Jaan Kanellis

Well it depends on who you ask for that one. if you asked Google I would think they would say they are a good idea, but how about the webmasters?

Why in the world would you want more of your published content on the Google SERP page to be viewed there first before getting to a page you can control? I dont know. I dont have an answer for that as I would think any webmaster in their right mind would like to keep things like prices and reviews on their own product page. problems with having them on Google are obvious. No one will ever click over to my site. A few bad reviews and no one is going to see the page at all. Price to high? Forget about trying to convert that new visitor, that was never even a visitor.

Now I am sure Google will say and think the opposite. These types of things can only help induce clicks through further:

if they see useful and relevant information from the page, they are more likely to click through.

Another big problem is updating the review/price numbers. obviously Google doesnt guarantee or say they will actually use these rich snippets for every site that provides the necessary annotations, but what happen if things get screwed up? What is the reviews are simple wrong or even worse the process are messed up. how can I change them quickly or know they will be updated from my site quickly? Google?

These Rich Snippets are nothing new and they have been testing this idea for a while. I just feel the more content that is taken from your site to be offered on the Google family of websites is a long term problem for webmasters everywhere. Long term I can only see engagement happening longer and more often through the Google branded websites and not yours.
