Google AdSense Controversy

By: Matthew Elshaw

Late last week, Google announced the release of 'AdSense for Domains' to all US based AdSense publishers. The service basically allows the owners...

...of undeveloped or parked domains to earn revenue by placing ads on these pages.

From the Google Inside AdSense blog:

With AdSense for domains, users can find relevant information rather than see empty pages or "page not found" errors. Today we present ads, links, and search results on the pages, and may add other useful information in the future.
Here is a screen shot of what a parked AdSense domain may look like:

Many have criticized the program in the past because it delivered poor quality traffic and was often a technique used by "domain squatters" to monetize their questionable websites.

Users are also worried about the recent string of AdWords and AdSense changes which all seem to be aimed towards Google increasing their ad revenue. For example, some of their recent changes include:
  • Allowing hard liquor and beer ads in AdWords
  • Showing text ads amongst image search
  • Placing ads on Google Finance, Google News, YouTube, Google Maps and even within their search suggest results.
I'm beginning to wonder whether these changes are really to improve the user experience, or just create more money for Google. What's your opinion?
