Google PageRank And Yahoo! Search Update!

By: Matthew Elshaw
2008-10-07

There has been discussion across various forums this weekend about simultaneous updates taking place over at Google and Yahoo!.

WebmasterWorld members are discussing a possible Yahoo! SERP update, while Google personality Matt Cutts has confirmed a toolbar PageRank update over the weekend.

Google PageRank Update

Google's PageRank update has now taken place and new PageRank values should be visible in the Google toolbar. Google employee Matt Cutts hinted at the fact this PageRank update was influenced by Google s detection of paid links:

"We definitely have worked to improve our paid-link and junk link detection algorithms. In our most recent PageRank update (9/27/2008) for example, there are some differences in PageRank because we've improved how we treat links, for example."
These PageRank values are usually a month or two old, and do not always reflect the importance of a website in the eyes of Google - so I would take this update with a grain of salt.

Yahoo! Search Update

Users are reporting an update in their Yahoo! rankings also. Some comments from the WebmasterWorld thread are below:

"Definitely an update. Keywords in URL is important, everyday more...."

"Saw a jump from #9 to #4 for one of my main key phrases."

"I knew it...I was just starting to come back after being down 30% for almost 3 months."
Yahoo! updates typically happen around the end of the month, so if true, this one's a little early. We still have not had confirmation of the update from the Yahoo! search blog, so If you've noticed a change in your Yahoo! ranking or even Google PageRank, leave your comments below!
