Google: FTC Would Sign Off On Yahoo Deal
By: Jordan McCollum 2008-04-29 As Andy mentioned in todays Pilgrims Picks, Reuters reports that Googles confident about the proposed ad deal with Yahoo receiving the OK from the FTC. If you dont remember, almost... ..three weeks ago, Yahoo announced that they would conduct a two week test of Googles AdSense for Search program. A scant eight days later, Yahoo was reportedly very happy with the deal"and talking about making the arrangement permanent. Reports surfaced late last week that the US Department of Justice was investigating the deal, which could possibly be a prelude to an FTC investigation. An anonymous source, presumably someone inside or close to Google, told Reuters:
Of course, taking advantage of someone elses market domination to make more money wouldnt be like creating an Internet advertising monopoly . . . oh, no, not at all. The source continued:
Unlike large chunks of the search engine advertising market. You know, one that really makes money? These are all pretty big words from someone who waited eight months for their last big deal to get approval. Joking aside, some people with actual expertise in the area do say that the deal would likely be approved:
Then again, I doubt that the DoJ and/or FTC are going to give the deal a rubber stamp just yet. After taking eight months to look at the DoubleClick deal, I think theyre being very careful about how much leeway they give the search engine giant.
