Yahoo! Adds Voice Command To Mobile Search
By: Navneet Kaushal 2008-04-04 Yahoo! Inc. unveiled new features to make online experience for mobile phone users more interactive, easy and relevant. Marco Boerries (Executive VP, Yahoo Connected Life Unit )... ...stated that Yahoo aimed to make weblinks more accessible to mobile users. They plan to achieve this by tapping deeper into the sites and providing consumers with 'voice commands' to search the Internet. In an interview, Marco Boerries said, "This is really a sea change. This is not about simple Web links any more." The announcement for the latest version of it's OneSearch has come at a time when Microsoft is vying to take over Yahoo. Yahoo! has struck deals with scores of operators worldwide to reach a potential target of 600 million mobile phone users who use mobile Internet services. The goal is to maximize it's subscriber base to 750 million mobile phone users. Yahoo! is broadening it's search result parameters for mobile phone users by allowing publishers to provide highly categorized information, which will enable the content that a user sees and it's presentation. This can also be termed as Semantic Web Search. It means that computers can recognize the information that is on a web page. This service will be fully operational for operators to provide to their subscribers in the first quarter of 2008. OneSearch allows searches for flight listings, locations, website names, restaurants and news. The voice search will allow a user to switch between typing and voice search at any time he wishes so. Voice searches take only 5 seconds to display results. In case of slower operator networks, it can take 10 to 20 seconds to return most search results. Blackberry users can avail this facility of OneSearch by downloading it from Yahoo!.Yahoo! also plans to launch this service on 500 different devices and in international markets.
