Yahoo Sued For Informing Chinese Government
By: Andy Beal 2007-04-19 Yahoo is being sued by the wife of a Chinese dissident over the companys release of information to the Chinese government. Shes claiming her husband has been tortured in the Chinese prison where he is being held, and holding Yahoo responsible. Ling is seeking damages under the Alien Tort Claims Act and the Torture Victims Protection Act, two statutes under which U.S. companies have been sued for allegedly aiding in human rights abuses overseas, Yahoo originally claimed they were simply abiding by the laws of the countries they operate in. As for this case? Yahoo said in a statement that it has not had time to review the lawsuit and could not comment on it. It added that it was distressed that citizens in China have been imprisoned for expressing their political views on the Internet. You know whats somewhat of a concern. Why is it that Yahoo and Google only seem to care about the laws of foreign countries, if they have actual operations there. There are many instances where they apparently ignore foreign governments, if they dont have any employees there. Isnt this a double standard?
