A Cautionary Tale About Sellers Of SEO Content

By: Michael Pedone

If you are looking for an SEO company, there are two things you should know about search engine content for your business website:

1. Properly optimized SEO copy is hugely important to the search engines, right up there with link popularity and spider friendly coding. Run like the wind if you encounter an SEO company that downplays the significance of content or offers shoddy, cookie cutter style copywriting.

2. Always ask to see samples or visit websites they have optimized so you can scope out their content for yourself. Be very, very picky.

Here's why.

As an SEO copywriter with many years in the business, I receive frequent invitations from SEO companies looking for freelance writers to join their stable (usually they want cheap writers who will churn out thousands of words for a few bucks).

Recently, I received a very revealing email from a UK-based SEO firm. And I want you to note the stark difference between the pitch they use to attract website writers like me to work for them, and the sales pitch they present on their website to attract SEO clients like you.

First of all, here's what they tell the public about their SEO copywriters, this is from their website:

"(Name of company) will provide: A team of experienced content writers who are trained in writing quality Search Engine Optimised Content. " (my italics)

Now take a look at the qualifications they are looking for when they seek out copywriters to write for their SEO clients. This is from their invitation to me:

"Writing the content is simply a case of cutting and pasting different bits of information, whilst adhering to a few easy rules such as beginning each opening sentence with a key word etc, it is not necessary to have a journalism background, anybody can do it!" (again, my italics).

This approach is not only irresponsible and an insult to professional web writers, it totally ignores one very important facet of web content: human beings read it too, not just search engine spiders! And human beings know the difference between a cut-and-paste job and informative, benefit-laden content that instills trust and creates an appetite for a product/service.

What's even more dangerous about these SEO companies is that often their copywriting services are embedded as part of a total package deal. So, many prospects will simply look at the list of optimization services on offer, check the price tag, and sign the contract.

And then live with buyers remorse for the duration of the deal.

Before signing that paper, check the SEO company's portfolio of work carefully. Visit their clients' websites and read the copy. Would it sell you?

And if you reach the contract stage, read the fine print religiously as loopholes and exceptions abound among unscrupulous SEOs.

And always, always remember this proverb: "Wed in haste, repent at your leisure." Same thing with SEO.
