Beware Of Terminal Search Terms
By: Jim Hedger 2006-05-25 Spyware researchers Ben Edelman and Hannah Rosenbaum led a team that entered 1,394 keywords and phrases on each of the major search engines, Google, MSN, Yahoo and Ask. They were looking for sites containing spyware or malware that might appear under commonly searched phrases. Their findings were published earlier this month in a paper titled, " The Safety of Internet Search Engines". Frighteningly, they found that results displayed under some keyword phrases associated with popular searches are heavily infested with spyware sites, in some cases accounting for 4 or more Top10 listings. According to Edelman and Rosenbaum's findings, the following eight keywords produce the most dangerous results. (don't go trying these searches at home) 1. Free screensavers 2. Bearshare 3. Screensavers 4. Winmx 5. Limewire 6. Download Yahoo Messenger 7. Lime wire 8. Free ringtones Another interesting finding posted to Edelman's blog says ppc or paid search results are often more dangerous than the free organic results, producing over twice as many spyware infested sites. "Search engine ads are a risky business. Overall, across all keywords and search engines, 8.5% of sponsored results were "red" or "yellow" by SiteAdvisor's standards, versus only 3.1% of organic results."
