Big Daddy Having Hiccups

By: Jim Hedger

Big Daddy is causing Google to act strange. Over the past few weeks, several large sites have dropped off the face of Google's map, results have been fluctuating wildly...

...and Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt admitted his servers are full to capacity.

Big Daddy is the pet name given the massive server and software upgrade Google embarked on last autumn. Taking almost six months to complete, the Big Daddy upgrade was thought to be the introduction of a much more robust set of Google results and services. Eight weeks after the upgrade was said to be finished, webmasters and SEOs are seeing bizarre and often inexplicable results.

There are a number of SEOs investigating the phenomena with various opinions and ideas currently forming. There are a number of discussions in the various SEO related web forums this week. (see links below)

Many say this sort of thing happens whenever Google does an algorithm update so seeing similar effects from an infrastructure/algorithm update shouldn't be too surprising. The effects will settle over time.

Others blame the issues on a poorly executed upgrade, citing Schmidt's statements that Google's servers are literally overflowing with data. The upgrade is causing more problems than it solved. This would serve to explain the slowing or periodic unavailability of other Google services such as Gmail but doesn't exactly explain why the database seems to be flushing content.

Another group thinks this might be the beginning of a new filtering initiative aimed at eliminating dodgy content and duplicate listings.

Whatever the cause and effect, lots of people are perceiving major issues at Google now and the timing and nature of those issues points to the Big Daddy and Jagger Updates.
