Online Direct Response Rates Down in Q4
The data showed click-through rates for advertiser-served ads continued to fall, down 45 percent from a year earlier to 0.4 percent. However, view-through rates -- users taking some action within 30 days of seeing an ad -- rose 42 percent to 0.75 percent. DoubleClick sees the trends as confirmation that more advertisers are using online ads to build brand awareness versus direct response.

Why does Bill Gates want Google?
You can tell the Net's favorite search engine, Google, has arrived. How so? Microsoft's Bill Gates wants it. Badly. And why's that? Because Google touches literally hundreds of millions of people with its service, it is the one company on the planet that has even more ubiquity than Microsoft. In other words, Google is the one company that could actually compete with Microsoft.

What other German search engines or directories are there for sites who want German-speaking visitors? Boiling with questions, I contacted Mike Grehan, the European Managing Director for iProspect. He spoke at the Chicago Search Engine Strategies Organic session with Brett Tabke.

Revenge of the Dot-coms
Both Amazon and Google have made great progress toward becoming broad-based Internetwide resources that, like operating systems and databases before them, can be used to create new forms of value in an ever-expanding set of ways. They are even managing to give tangible meaning to the idea of Web services, something that Microsoft, IBM and other pure IT players have struggled to do.

Debates about ODP/DMOZ
It really comes down to "who polices the police" and the fact is its really easy to arbitrarily dismiss a site (submitted to DMOZ) when no explanation or even an email is needed. I think criteria standards will be better upheld if even an anonymous email is required.

Exclusive: Google Testing New Look
The Google index page added a "More" link this morning directing visitors to a page listing all of their various services. Search results also appear in a different format with the words "Google Web" in the logo. AdWords appear on the side without the colored box as well. Apparently, Google is testing these changes because for some visitors no changes are visible. Clearly, Google is having trouble trying to be a Yahoo type portal without a Yahoo type front page.
