The Great Google Filter Fiasco
On or about November 17, 2003, countless English-language ecommerce sites no longer appeared near the top of the rankings when their owners used the search terms that they considered most important. Four days later, I discovered that by adding a nonsense exclusion term, the links returned by Google shifted dramatically, and the results were very close to what these site owners had come to expect over the last few months.

How Deep into Your Site Are the Spiders Crawling?
Have you ever wondered how far down into your site the search engine spiders are going? Are the pay inclusion spiders coming at regular intervals like they're supposed to?

Wouldn't it be great to see which spiders are visiting your site and which pages they're crawling . . . at a glance?

Search is Media
I just returned from my trip to Chicago, where I attended the Search Engine Strategies Conference. I was lucky enough to meet and interview search gurus such as Danny Sullivan, Andy Beal, and Jill Whalen, in addition to representatives from all of the major search engines, including Google, Inktomi, and AskJeeves. I have so much I want to tell you but I can't include it all in this issue!

Search Guru Danny Sullivan Talks Google
Are You Addicted to Google? Go ahead, admit it. You're an addict, too. This morning at the Search Engine Strategies Conference in Chicago, Danny Sullivan gave a Keynote speech titled "Google Anonymous" -- the joke is many people seem to be addicted to Google. Danny is considered one of the most prominent search engine marketing experts in the world. He offered a step-by-step process to help people overcome this "addiction."

Google Acquires Sprinks
Last week, PPC giant, Google, purchased Sprinks. Sprinks advertisements, which were distributed over the About.com media network, will be now be replaced by Google Adwords advertisements within the next month. If you do not have a Google Adwords account, and would still like to have your site seen where Sprinks was showing before, then you will need to open a Google Adwords account.

Looking Ahead: The Future Of Search Marketing
#1. What do you see in the future of the SEO marketing? My concern is that with everyone seemingly wanting to fatten their wallets with paid inclusion and PPC, that the search engines will drop the regular spidering and go with advertising. This would only make it impossible for the little guy to get good positioning. Will the Internet community "allow" for this to happen and just go along with it?

Making Sure Your Site is Crawler-friendly
I couldn't find any "meaty" questions for this issue, so I thought I'd just talk generally about what makes a site "crawler-friendly." I used to call this "search-engine-friendly" but my friend Mike Grehan convinced me that the more accurate phrase was "crawler-friendly" because it's the search engine crawlers (or spiders) that your site needs to buddy-up to, as opposed to the search engine itself.

Expert Advice: Keywords Determined By Page Or Site?
We talk about the importance of keyword phrases -- is that a per-page thing or a per-site thing? I mean for example if you are submitting a site to google.com -- you submit www.yoursite.com -- now Google evidently will spider that whole site when doing searches, is that correct? Then if your whole 10-page site was dedicated to middle-aged women, is keyword density based upon one page in that site or the whole site?

Submitting to Inktomi + 5 More SEO Tips
Jill, I've been working on optimizing a site that is not a new site. It's been a live site for quite some time. I was thinking of hand-submitting it to Inktomi, but realized MSN and Hotbot have already indexed it without me doing anything. Is it necessary to pay to have your site submitted if it has already been indexed for free? Is it possible that it will be dropped from Inktomi if you don't pay to submit?

Just a few years ago, when asked “How do you drive traffic to your website”, many companies would name banner ads as their main marketing medium for increasing online revenues. Maximize the ROI of Your Search Engine Marketing by Measuring Beyond Click-Through
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is the art and science of increasing a web site's visibility across search engines and directories on a strategically defined list of keywords and phrases. The key to a successful SEM strategy is constant testing, revising and optimizing based on metrics. In order to maximize your Return on Investment, you must measure the performance beyond the click-through-from acquisition to conversion to retention.

One of the most important steps in any site’s publicity campaign is the submission to the Open Web Directory (http://www.dmoz.org) as this directory provides search results for many of the most important search engines and online portals. Search Engine Basics: The Meta Tag
Now, I know what you are thinking; “surely we don’t need to worry about Meta tags, as most search engines ignore them” and for the most part you would be right. The importance of Meta tags has diminished so considerably over the past couple of years, that I fully expect this to be the last article that I will write discussing their optimization. That’s not to say that they are already a dead issue, but in the next 6-12 months their importance will be virtually extinguished.

Elevating PageRank And Choosing A Keyword Focus
PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."

Portal Websites – SEO SPAM Or Legitimate Search Engine Placement Tactic?
The use of mini websites (also known as portals) as a search engine placement tool is a hotly debated topic and one which is sure to bring up warnings of "spamming" and raise a few eyebrows at the legitimacy. Portals have, for too long, been used as an easy link- building tool offering nothing more than regurgitated information, sometimes vaguely reworded, for the sole purpose of building links to some central website.

Increase Your Google Ranking
Use pay inclusion! You'll get your site in the indices much faster, and the benefits are great. You don't have to submit every single page through pay inclusion -- just the most important pages of your site. Then, you never have to submit those pages again, as long as you continue using pay inclusion. Once you begin a link building campaign, your site will be picked up by the other spiders for the engines and indexed that way as well as through links pointing to your site.

Taking Time to Optimize: Is it Worth Delaying Your Site's Launch?
Back in December Yahoo! announced that it planned to buy Inktomi. It now appears that deal will indeed occur, and go through sometime in March. Meanwhile, Yahoo! has ceased compiling search results itself and is instead getting results through Google. The popular SEO wisdom of the moment says to ignore Yahoo! (after all, why bother getting listed at Yahoo! when the results are coming from Google?), but be sure to put a note on your calendar to reevaluate Yahoo! in March. Once Inktomi is in place, the landscape will shift again. Yahoo! plans to provide MSN with search results. Which makes me wonder whether Yahoo! will continue to receive results from Google, or will it use its own search engine instead? It’s a complicated old SEO world.
