[2003-12-31] Search Engine Predictions for 2004
After being asked to contribute some predictions for 2004 to a search engine newsletter, I found it so much fun to make my search cynicism tangible that I took it seriously.

[2003-12-30] How To Optimize Your Google Description
When it comes to describing your site, Google assembles what is known as a snippet description to display in their search results. Sometimes it's a good description - one that prompts potential visitors to click on your link. Other times, it isn't. Take the case in point where the following page (ranked at #1) in a keyword search for scuba dive "entices" the potential site visitor by listing the various PADI locations from around the world...

[2003-12-29] Google's Latest Dance
Google's recent November changes to its algorithm, now known as the "Florida Update", have left many site owners in a quandary. Many who were enjoying top placements, have lost their spots, and apparently, for no real reason.

[2003-12-18] Location of Global Navigation for Optimal Search Engine Indexing
Reader Question: I've been told that I should put my navbar (navigation bar) on the right side of my Web site (or use a table trick to get the same effect) so search engine spiders will read my title and text first, and the navbar last. Is that necessary for optimum search engine positioning?

[2003-12-18] Keyword Research for Search Engine Visibility
Reader Question: I am a member of a group of small B&B's (bed and breakfasts) who are planning to develop a "brand" for our district [something along the lines of "country hospitality on the coast"] We are interested in finding out what key phrases would be the most popular search terms used by our potential guests. We've collected customer profile data on our existing guests to establish the demographics of the target markets that we are aiming for. Now we would like to determine the best key phrases before registering a business name and deciding on a Web site URL etc. I've tested WebPosition Gold 2 but it only seems to operate with an existing site. Is there a way to do this with WP Gold 2 or is there another tool for this purpose?

[2003-12-17] The Great Google Filter Fiasco: Mom & Pop Take it on the Chin
On or about November 17, 2003, countless English-language ecommerce sites no longer appeared near the top of the rankings when their owners used the search terms that they considered most important. Four days later, I discovered that by adding a nonsense exclusion term, the links returned by Google shifted dramatically, and the results were very close to what these site owners had come to expect over the last few months.

[2003-12-16] Google Is Changing Quickly
With the big buzz of Novembers fall within Google comes a newly indexed data-base...

[2003-12-16] Google's Shake up - A View From the Beginning
It has been exactly one month since Google introduced its infamous Florida Update. As the Florida Update has brought about the largest and most comprehensive shake-up of Google's listings ever, it has generated a great deal of interest around the world and genuine panic for the literally millions of webmasters who's sites have been adversely affected by the change. The following article is a compilation of our writings about the Florida Update since November 17th, the first Monday after the shift.

[2003-12-15] Buying & Selling Google PageRank - Too Good to be True?
There seems to be a lot of buzz about websites that are willing to shell out big bucks for links on sites with high Google PageRank (PR). And many webmasters and webmistresses are going crazy to cash in on the big windfall.

[2003-12-10] Search Guru Danny Sullivan Talks Google
Are You Addicted to Google? Go ahead, admit it. You're an addict, too. This morning at the Search Engine Strategies Conference in Chicago, Danny Sullivan gave a Keynote speech titled "Google Anonymous" -- the joke is many people seem to be addicted to Google. Danny is considered one of the most prominent search engine marketing experts in the world. He offered a step-by-step process to help people overcome this "addiction."

[2003-12-09] Why I Don't Want a #1 Pay-Per-Click Search Engine Listing
Pay-per-click search engines are backward. - Your site is listed in the search results according to pertinent keywords and key phrases, but those have nothing to do with the rank or position of your listing.

[2003-12-03] Should You Pay For Inclusion?
Hello Jill, a quick question if your time permits: I have read so many conflicting things about pay submissions to the likes of Yahoo, LookSmart, Teoma, Inktomi, and others. It is getting really expensive but we are considering doing it "just in case" it affects our rankings with engines.

[2003-12-03] Cracking Google's New Algorithm
Google recently made far-reaching changes to the way it ranks search results, and the search marketing community has been abuzz with tales of woe ever since. Some have speculated that the key to understanding Google's latest is that they've applied some sort of test of "commerciality" to certain phrases, roiling the waters for sites ranked well on those phrases, and leaving non-commercial phrases more or less alone. The idea is that this would cause a stampede of site owners over to the paid AdWords program, or at least making the point that Google isn't up for providing a free lunch to clever "SEO-ized" sites indefinitely.
